In celebration of the 40th Toronto International Film Festival, second only to Cannes, and known for launching Oscar hopefuls, we’re discovering there’s plenty to love about Canada. Canadians are much like us, many of them with similar accents, so we don’t notice when they show up in our favorite TV shows or movies. Cable programming is full of Canadian-produced television shows, and musicians and comedians become some of our favorites, without our even realizing it. So let’s point out how much they bring to our lives in the good ol’ US of A, and the world at-large, and share some love for our neighbors to the north! Plus, team member Michele Coles will join us to share her observations from her up-close-and-personal trip to the Great White North!
- Murdoch Mysteries (on Ovation Channel as The Artful Detective) is one of my favorite shows ever! – In the late 1890s Toronto, police Inspector William Murdoch takes a new, more scientific approach to solving crimes. Assisted by coroner Dr. Julia Ogden and Constable George Crabtree, Murdoch introduces such concepts as finger marks and lie detecting machines. He has the support of his somewhat doubtful superior, Inspector Brackenreid, though at times, even he finds Murdoch’s methods – and claims – somewhat astounding. Started in 2008 – they’re in Season 9. http://www.acornonline.com
- The Listener on Ion Television – started in 2009 in its 5th Season, (perhaps its last) stars Lauren Lee Smith who played Riley on CSI (Vegas) for a while. A young paramedic discovers he has telepathic powers, and uses them to help solve criminal investigations.
- Dark Matter on Syfy – A guy from the Listener, Anthony Lemke, who played Becker, and Jodelle Ferland, who played Bree Tanner in the Twilight Saga movies. The six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination: a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. With no idea whose side they are on, they face a deadly decision. Will these amnesiacs turn their backs on history, or will their pasts catch up with them? Read the rest of this entry
